HK 4. Includes family history and buildings (and both at once).

Two more and then we’re done with Hong Kong, I promise.

Turns out Hong Kong has even more construction than Yangon. And it seems infinitely safer.

This was a small reminder that not all of Hong Kong is super rich and/or successful. That evening we also walked past an impressively industrious, although somewhat heartbreaking, collection of dwellings under an overpass, constructed entirely of cardboard and plastic bags.

This is the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. I got a little obsessed with the architecture. You're lucky I'm only posting one photo.

Star ferry! I had a book as a kid in which a brave Star ferry ventured out into the open ocean and saved a bunch of people stranded in a storm. It was obviously a formative influence.

For some reason there are statues of people standing on the roofs of buildings around Hong Kong. Definitely not confusing for visitors.

  1. Loved the photos of Hong Kong, especially around Repulse Bay.

And yes, you got the building where our apartment was – looks like they have tarted up the outside cladding with more modern tiles. (The original tiles were small, green tiles similar to those that were used in the cladding of the old Commonwealth Government office block at (following an 1980s redevelopment, what is now called) Chifley Square in the Sydney CBD … and which was colloquially known by quite an apposite moniker as a result!)

I always felt that the Taoist shrine at the south-eastern end of Repulse Bay beach was uniquely incongruous (at least to a western sensibility)! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwun_Yam_Shrine
